I did a lot of experimentation with the Moog Werkstatt and the Korg SQ-1 during my Analog & Modular Synthesis class. I was really interested in changing parts of an ongoing sound ever so slightly where it would be predictable, yet random.
I noticed that the buttons on the sequencer (there are 8 on the Korg SQ-1) were similar to 8-bit binary numbers, and I used that idea to dictate which pitches in the sequence are on and off. The first color in the row that's turned on would correspond to the button pressed on the Werkstatt, and the rest of the pitches played would be changed through listening and slight improvisation.
This project connects to me on a deep level, as I am extremely invested in color and how it relates to our surroundings. That idea is the inspiration behind the rainbow graphic score that is easily readable doing the structured improvisation piece. This piece can be recreated by randomizing a new set of binary numbers that would "reset" the score and be unique every single time.
